Campbell's Field Will Be Torn Down To Make Way For Athletic Complex In Camden
CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- Once considered a part of Camden's renaissance, the city's $35 million baseball stadium will soon make way for athletic fields.
Rutgers University will pay a major part of the bill.
Rutgers-Camden will provide up to $7.5 million in return for use of those fields.
"The athletic complex would ultimately be owned by the city of Camden," University spokesman Mike Sepanic told KYW Newsradio. "Rutgers-Camden athletes would play on it. So our men's baseball team needs a field to play on. We also have a women's lacrosse team and we'd love to start field hockey and men's lacrosse as well."
Right now, the men's baseball team uses Campbell's Field, which opened with the minor league Riversharks as its main tenants in 2001. They left in 2015 when they couldn't pay the rent.
Camden County now owns the facility and they tried to find another minor league team, but failed. It's thought this new plan will give the community greater access to the facility.
