Camden County Woman Being Treated For Meningitis

CAMDEN, NJ.J (CBS) - A Camden woman has come down with meningitis.

The usual warnings apply here. First and foremost, this is not easily spread, according to Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen.

"It's usually spread by sharing eating utensils, sharing drinks, sharing cigarettes, living in the same household or sleeping in the same dwelling."

And truth be told, up to 20-percent of any general population can carry the bacteria at any time. Only a small number of people get sick, and early symptoms often mimic a cold. But left untreated, the results can cause serious brain and spinal damage. The woman, whom Keashen describes as a "senior citizen", was hospitalized at Kennedy Memorial in Cherry Hill last Friday.

She, and her immediate family, are being treated with antibiotics.
