Camden County Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby Girl

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- A police officer was recognized by the Camden County Police Department for going above and beyond the call of duty responding to a medical emergency.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 25, Sergeant Terrell Watkins and two other officers responded to a park at St. John and Division streets where a pregnant woman had gone into sudden labor and was about to give birth.

Sergeant Watkins, who is a trained EMT, directed the other officers to find a blanket while he rendered aid to the woman. He proceeded to deliver a healthy baby girl.

"It was a little surreal. We're used to seeing various different things here in the city, but not a woman giving birth in the middle of the street. Even myself, in my 23 years of EMS experience and 17 years of police experience, I've never experienced anything like that," Sergeant Watkins said.

The newborn was wrapped in a blanket and rushed to Cooper University Hospital.

For his efforts, Sergeant Watkins was named the Department's Officer Of The Week.
