By Marcy Norton

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Camden County police are searching for a person who they say tried to kill one of their officers late last night.

The shooting incident took place about 11:30pm, on Kenwood Avenue.  Police say an officer was following a suspicious vehicle, which came to a sudden stop before two people jumped out and ran.

According to investigators, one of the subjects fired a handgun at the police car, hitting it several times, and a bullet fragment hit the officer in the arm.

Police initially thought the officer had been injured by flying glass or other automotive debris, but later determined that he had been hit by a bullet fragment.

The injured officer continued to pursue the subjects, who eventually got away.  The officer, whose name was not released, was later treated at Cooper Medical Center and was expected to make a full recovery.
