Burger Review: Standard Tap

By Glen Macnow

Score:  7.7
Price: Standard burger (seven ounces)- $11, although we the Double Standard for $13.75 plus $3 for bacon.
Location: Second and Poplar, Northern Liberties.

I loved this place when I sampled burgers nine years ago, and I still love it today. First off, Standard Tap is perhaps  the best venue for local beers, with at least a dozen on tap at all times. Second, it's a real bar – not a frou-frou trendy place, not a gimmicky themed faux bar.

But we're here to judge burgers.  And the Standard Burger is worthy. The Double Standard – which had to weigh in at close to a pound – was savory, peppery and bursting with flavor. The meat is ground loose, which seems to keep more juices inside. It was complimented with Monterey Jack cheese, smoky bacon and lightly grilled onions. "Mmm-mmmm. That is a tasty burger," as Jules Winnfield might say.

The only thing pulling the score down here is the toasted brioche bun which, on this particularly Sunday night, was either a shade stale or over-toasted. Hey, it happens. We still love the joint.
