"Bulb Day" Event Raises Money For Local Nonprofit

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Liberty Property Trust in Malvern, Chester County hosted its annual "Bulb Day" event on Wednesday. Workers dug into the ground to raise money - and hope - for a program that helps women on the brink of homelessness find housing.

After each blooming season, Liberty, the real estate investment trust, whose headquarters is at the Great Valley Corporate Center, digs up 15,000 flowering bulbs, which can be replanted.

Martha Garvin was delighted to buy several bags of twelve, each of which contained tulips and daffodils.

"They do this every year, and I  think it's a great cause," she said. "Home of the Sparrow is awesome."

Proceeds go to the nonprofit, Home of the Sparrow, which partners with single women or mothers facing homelessness, due to an unexpected crisis, to secure housing.

Nicole Campellone, who works for Liberty, is into the recycling concept.

"We pull from throughout the corporate center," she said, "and they could put the bulbs in their yards and gardens."

Elisa Rodgers, a volunteer for Home of the Sparrow, says they're keeping the bulbs from going to waste and raising funds.

"Were reusing the flowers and helping out a very notable charity in the area," she said.

Last year, more than $2500 was raised for Home of the Sparrow.
