Building Muscle Mass Reduces Risk Of Diabetes

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Insulin resistance is a major contributing factor to the development of diabetes.

In cases of insulin resistance, the hormone insulin doesn't have the expected effectiveness at controlling blood sugar. Studies have found overweight and obese individuals can develop this condition.

Reducing body mass can improve insulin sensitivity. Another way to help with the condition is to build muscle. Very low muscle mass is actually a risk factor for insulin resistance.

According to a study of 13,500 individuals, those who built muscle mass through exercise developed better insulin sensitivity and a lower risk of pre-diabetes or overt diabetes.
