Broad St. Post-Election Luncheon Gets A New, More Charitable Venue

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --Primary winners from both major parties spent part of their "day after" today helping raise money for the Broad Street Ministry, with a luncheon and a chance to rub elbows with fellow movers and shakers.
Jim Kenney, the Democratic nominee for Philadelphia mayor, made fighting poverty a major theme of his campaign, and he proposed today's fundraiser as a way to "change the paradigm of post-election luncheons" -- away from the pricey Palm restaurant and toward the people who most need the city's help.
"The people at The Palm don't need our help," Kinney said at the Broad Street Ministry, about three blocks down Broad Street from the Bellevue restaurant where the post-election luncheons are traditionally held. "The people here do."

Kenney also invited his Republican opponent in the November election, Melissa Murray Bailey, to join him. She too pledged to make fighting poverty a priority.
"I want us to enable people who are homeless to make the transition to stability and job-readiness," she said today.
All this attention on their issues gave Broad Street Ministry client José a measure of satisfaction.
"My prayer got answered," he said today, "so I hope they do a good job. We need some new things."
