Box Office Report: 'Fantastic Beasts' Works Its Magic
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Picking up right where the boy wizard left off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a spinoff of the Harry Potter franchise starring Eddie Redmayne from author J.K. Rowling, finished first at the box office by earning an estimated $75 million on its debut weekend – no surprise there.
Holdovers Doctor Strange with $18 million, Trolls with $17 million, and Arrival with $12 million took the next three spots.
The debuting teen comedy, The Edge of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson, was seventh with $5 million.
And the new boxing drama, Bleed for This, placed eighth with a modest $2 million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were about the same as those of last weekend, but were well behind those of the counterpart weekend last year.
