Bomb Squad Responds To World War II-Era Marking Round In Cape May County
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J., (CBS) – The bomb squad responded and some buildings and homes were evacuated after a resident turned in military ordnance to the Middle Township Police Department Tuesday.
Police say around 3:45 p.m., the resident walked into the police lobby and reported the ordnance was found by her son while fishing. Officers immediately removed it from the station and buildings and residential homes along Mechanic Street were evacuated as a precaution.
Atlantic City Police Department's Bomb Squad responded and evaluated the ordnance. They determined it was a World War II era marking round. Police say the round would have had an explosive tip to mark targets.
Bomb technicians declared the round to be inert and safely removed it.
Police remind residents if anyone finds what looks like unexploded military ordnance, they should not touch it and call 911. Police say the device can still be live, even after long periods of time.
