Best Diet For Diabetics

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - I am often asked what is a good diet for diabetics. My answer is that it is largely the same as a good diet for most of us.

You choose carbs with lots of fiber. These include fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereals.

In addition, go easy on desserts, white bread and sweetened drinks.

Another big step: choose fats that are healthier for your heart. These include vegetable oils, olives, avocados, nuts, and low-fat mayonnaise. Cut back on butter, regular mayonnaise, and stick margarine. Also limit fried foods, bacon and meats with visible fat on them.

Finally - and this really seems to help - drink plenty of water. Sugar-free soda and sugar-free fruit drinks are also good choices.

The final point: if food can stay on your shelf for an extended period of time and not spoil - it is probably not good for you.
