Beiler's Bakery: Maple Bacon Doughnut, $1

By Glen Macnow

Beiler's Bakery
Reading Terminal Market

You'll find this Amish-run bakery at the northwest corner of the market, and you'll undoubtedly find a long line waiting for their 40 varieties of pastries and doughnuts. Book the time – it's worth the wait. I could talk up the blueberry fritters or Boston cream delights, but the focus is bacon, and their maple bacon doughnut will, no doubt, be the best thing you put in your mouth this month.

It's a simple concept – sugary maple crème injected into a round pastry, sugar glazed and then topped with vanilla frosting, a swirl of caramel and – wait for it – bacon sprinkles. Not Bacos or some other fake substitute, but real bacon, diced into small pieces and generously laid on top. The combo of the bacon with the icing and frothy maple crème will have you drooling like Homer Simpson.

When I started this hunt, a few people said to me, "Bacon desserts? How'd that going to taste good?" Your answer can be found right here. Folks, we've got a contender for the throne.
