Bancroft Hopes To Sell Haddonfield, NJ Property To Drug Treatment Company

HADDONFIELD, N.J. (CBS) -- After being debated for years what to do with "Bancroft," a facility in Haddonfield, NJ for developmentally challenged kids, a new proposal has surfaced to sell it to a developer for a drug treatment facility.
Haddonfield officials had tried to buy it. There has been talk of housing, offices, school expansion, and/or open space. But nothing was settled.
Now comes word that Bancroft will sell the property to Recovery Services of America, based in King of Prussia, Pa., for use as a drug treatment facility.
Chris Maynes, with the group Haddonfield Encouraging Responsible Development, is among those opposed to that idea.
"Many of RCA's patients will be good people who just went down a wrong path, but we also must acknowledge the correlation between drug abuse and crime, and that some of the patients will be prone to criminal activity," he tells KYW Newsradio.
Ultimately, a zoning variance will be needed for the property. And town commissioners could well be called upon to handle any appeals.
