Average Thanksgiving Dinner In Philly Costs About $3 Less Than National Average

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Residents of Philadelphia spend at least $3 less than the national average on their Thanksgiving dinner.

The average holiday meal in the City of Brotherly Love costs $46.41, compared to a national average of just under $50.

That's apparently because a 16-pound turkey costs about $2.21 less here than elsewhere. Other items that are cheaper in Philly include sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie mix and green peas.

But Philadelphians aren't getting deals on everything. Rolls, stuffing, pie shells and cranberries cost slightly more than the national average here.

The City Controller's office says the annual cost of Thanksgiving report is part of the monthly economic report. It's calculated by averaging the retail prices of foods for a traditional Thanksgiving meal from grocery stores in Philadelphia then comparing local prices to national averages from the American Farm Bureau Federation.
