Authorities ID Elderly Man Killed By Snowplow

READING, Pa. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have released the name of an elderly pedestrian struck and killed by a snowplow.

Police in Reading identified the victim Tuesday as 71-year-old Gilbert Birdsey, who lived about four blocks away from the scene of the accident.

Police said a city public works pickup truck equipped with a plow was turning left at 11:20 a.m. Monday when it struck Birdsey, who was crossing the street (see previous story).

He was pronounced dead just before noon at Reading Hospital. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday but results were not immediately available.

Police and the forensic unit of the Berks County district attorney's office are investigating. Public works officials and the mayor's office haven't commented.
