Author Updates Guide To Having Drug-Free Kids Because He Says Dangers And Lures Have Changed

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The ravages of drug addiction are well-known but it can be a tough fight for parents to keep their kids out of that risky pursuit. A book offers a little bit of prevention instead of the need for a cure.

Joseph Califano Jr. has been in this fight for decades. As a former health secretary and founder of the National Center on Addiction and Drug Abuse, he has updated his book How To Raise A Drug-Free Kid, after less than 10 years due to changes in drug strength, social media and brain science.

"You can see what the difference is between the brain of a kid who smokes pot and the one who doesn't and parents need to know that 3/4 of the kids in treatment for dependence on a substance are in treatment for dependence on marijuana."

Califano says kids don't understand consequences, so parents have to.
