AT&T Beefing Up Service For DNC

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Democratic National Convention is coming to Philadelphia this July. Tens of thousands will be visiting the city to take part.

AT&T is beefing up their network to ensure everyone who attends can send all the tweets and Snapchat videos they want.

It's not just the delegates who will benefit from the improvements.

As more and more people rely on social media apps to connect with friends, the bigger the strain is on wireless networks.

Kurt Woehr is AT&T's director of network engineering for Philadelphia. He says one area that needed an upgrade was inside the Wells Fargo Center, which is hosting the DNC.

"We're doubling the capacity of that system. One thing that we didn't have in place was good floor coverage, so we had to come up with an innovative design for that. We're using globe shaped antennas."

He says many of the upgrades in the city for the convention are permanent, with the exception of some temporary cell towers.

"Better reliability, better speeds."

And the improved service is available for anybody on any network.
