ATM Explosion In Northern Liberties Leaves Cash Scattered Over Sidewalk
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An ATM explosion in Philadelphia's Northern Liberties neighborhood left cash scattered all over the sidewalk early Wednesday morning. Brazen thieves, in plain view of multiple surveillance cameras on the 1000 block of North Second Street, hit up the Wells Fargo Bank ATM with explosives and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
"That's crazy they did that and got away with it," neighbor Lorran Rodrigues said.
A neighbor who did not want to appear on camera recalls snapping a photo early Wednesday morning of the suspects' vehicle.
She says not one but two loud bangs woke her up and shook her home just after 4 a.m. Wednesday. She called 911.
She says as the suspects then took a sledgehammer to the machine, sending money flying and lying in the street.
Eyewitnesses told police they saw a white SUV speeding away from the scene. It was last spotted on Vine Street before those suspects got away.
Neighbors say this is the second time thieves have targeted this particular ATM. They say someone did the very same thing last spring.
A troubling pattern here and a widespread problem across the city.
"I lived in the Northeast just a couple of months ago and they were doing it around there too. That's crazy," resident Christian Iosif said. "I'm surprised they were able to get the explosive first of all. I'm surprised that it's happening again. How do you really fix a problem like this?"
The ATF is now investigating.
So far, no arrests have been made. Anyone with information should call police.
