Atlantic City Race Course Says It's Closing Next Week
MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City Race Course says it's closing for good after next week.
The thoroughbred track in Mays Landing is one of four horse tracks in New Jersey.
Joe Wilson, president of Bensalem, Pennsylvania-based Greenwood ACRA, which owns the track, said in a statement Friday that it must close "due to continuous business decline in the industry, the current regional economic climate and the absence of alternative revenue opportunities."
He said that it would remain open until Jan. 16 for simulcast racing. Customers can cash winning tickets at the track until then, and at the company's Favorite's at Vineland, an off-track betting site, after that. The company is based in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.
New Jersey has been battling with sports leagues to allow sports betting at its casinos and race tracks, a move seen as a way to try to save the horse-racing industry in the state. Monmouth Park Racetrack has been preparing to accept sports books if it's allowed.
The track opened in 1946.
