Atlantic City Man Charged In Deadly Shootout

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) — Murder charges have been filed against an Atlantic City man accused of taking part in a gunfight last year that led to the death of a bicyclist who happened to be riding in the area.

Atlantic County prosecutors say 24-year-old Rodney Smiley also faces conspiracy and weapons charges stemming from the Sept. 6 shootout in Atlantic City. His bail was set at $1 million cash, and he faces a possible life sentence if he's convicted.

Prosecutors say 59-year-old Jose Ortiz had just left his mother's home when he unknowingly rode his bike into a shootout involving "multiple individuals." He made it to his brother's home a short distance away, but soon collapsed from a gunshot wound to the side.

Smiley is currently serving a state prison term for weapons possession.
