At Masterman School, Students Continue Raking In Achievement Awards

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Despite the turmoil surrounding the Philadelphia school district's budget crisis, one of its top high schools is celebrating.

Thirty-three students at Masterman High School have received honors from the College Board, including six National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Senior Jamie Schwartz is among them.

"It's just another honor to add to my résumé," she tells KYW Newsradio, "and to kind of distinguish me from other people in the application process."

Jamie's mom, Staci, agrees:  the honor will help Jamie compete for college.

"Right now she's interested in Penn, Columbia, (Johns) Hopkins, and Drexel, for engineering," Staci Schwartz noted.

And Jamie's dad, Marc, says the accomplishments of Masterman students shows what other schools can achieve if they have the right support.

"If kids are really given the opportunity with the right teachers, with the right programs, they can really shine," he said.
