Ask A Philadelphia Bartender: Your Top Martini Recipe

David Tang heads up the cocktail program at The Continental. David has been with Starr Restaurants for over seven gratifying years. He had his first start making Bonsai Martinis at Buddakan Philly. Then he moved on to accomplish the position of Head Bartender at the distinguished Ranstead Room. Here is a list of five Continental Martinis that are currently on the menu and the breakdown of how each is made.

Astronaut

"This is a Continental signature that has been our top selling drink since 1995. The drink name is based on one of the main ingredients that was advertised as a space age drink."

  • 1.5 oz of Peach Vodka
  • 1 oz of Orange Liqueur
  • 1 oz of Tang

Combine ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake until the shaker is extremely cold to the touch. Strain into a Tang-rimmed martini glass.

Continental Martini

"This is another Continental signature that has been around since the beginning. A cocktail that Dean Martin would order."

  • 2.5 oz of Reyka Vodka
  • 0.5 oz of Martini Rossi Dry Vermouth

Combine ingredients into a mixing glass or pint glass. Add ice until it fills the glass and then stir until the top of the mixing glass is nice and cold. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with three olives.

Gimlet

"A refreshing twist on your grandparents favorite drink."

  • 1.5 oz of Bluecoat Gin
  • 0.5 oz of Simple Syrup
  • 0.5 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 inch sliced cucumber
  • 8-10 mint leaves

Combine the simple syrup, fresh lime juice, cucumber and mint into a shaker. Muddle the ingredients and then add the gin. Add ice to the shaker and shake until the shaker is extremely cold to the touch. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a thin cucumber slice.

18th & Locust

"A floral variation on the classic scotch sour. This drink is named after the crossroads of one of our favorite restaurants in Philadelphia, The Dandelion."

  • 1.5 oz of Dewar's White Label
  • 0.5 oz of Honey Syrup
  • 0.5 oz of fresh squeezed lemon juice

Combine ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake until the shakers are extremely cold to the touch. Strain into a martini glass and then with an atomizer filled with rose water, give it a couple of light sprays.

Bumble Bee

"A new drink recently added to our list. It's a twist on the Bee's Knees made with vodka instead of gin."

  • 1.5 oz of Absolut Citron
  • 0.5 oz of honey syrup
  • 0.5 oz of fresh squeezed lemon juice

Combine ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake until the shakers are extremely cold to the touch. Strain into a martini glass and then garnish with a lemon twist.
