As First Snowflakes Of The Season Fall, Local Residents Getting Ready For Winter Ahead

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's just like going to the dentist -- you don't want to go buy salt, but you know you should.

"They know they're going to need this stuff so they figure they might as well get it done," says hardware store owner Andy Siegel.

Andy Siegel owns Fairmount Hardware, his store now a winter wonderland of heaters, scrapers, firewood, insulation, and yes, salt.

"This year we ordered a lot more salt and shovels, calcium. We try and gauge what the winter is going to be," Siegel said.

This customer played the same guessing game. His result?

"We're supposed to get a lot of snow this year. So I figured might as well get it early before we get the first big snowfall," Matt Tarditi said.

Others felt the same way.

"Buying extra salt. I already have two bags in my front entryway," Rebecca Arch said.

Prices are already higher to start this year after a winter season last year none of us wish to repeat.

And PennDOT says they're ready too. They expect to have over 110,000 tons of salt within the next few weeks that they'll use throughout this winter season.
