Anti Defamation League Releases Study On Harassment Of Journalists During Presidential Campaign

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new study on anti-Semetic harassment of journalists has been released by the Anti Defamation League.

Study co-author Oren Segal says the Anti Defamation League decided to do a study of harassment during this recent presidential campaign because,"as the presidential campaign continued, more and more journalists were getting harassed."

He says they took an in-depth look at harassment on Twitter that included anti-Semetic memes, sentiments, photos of journalists and their families superimposed on Nazi imagery, or those who have had their personal information released for the purpose of harassment.

"Social media being what it is, there's more and more people online now than ever before, and that includes extremists. So eight years ago, we saw extremists expressing their concern, conspiracy theories, but we didn't see journalists reporting on it being harassed in the way we saw now."

Segal says the ADL is looking into what impact this harassment will have on freedom in America.

"One of the things that we tried to figure out in the study is -- does this sort of trolling have an impact on journalists wanting to do their job? And we're still exploring that."
