Annual Nationwide Challenge Raises Awareness About Hearing Loss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tuesday, May 31st marks the 3rd Annual "One Day Without Sound." It's a nationwide challenge designed to increase awareness about hearing loss.

Shawn Veight, a hearing instrument specialist with the Miracle Ear Foundation, says you don't have to look far to find someone with hearing loss.

"In the United States, there are more than 48 million Americans who have some degree of hearing loss," Veight said.

On "One Day Without Sound," Veight and others are urging people to wear a pair of earplugs or sound reducing headphones to realize how much we take sound for granted. And he hopes people will do something to prevent hearing loss.

"There are many factors where hearing loss is completely preventable, but it's not reversible," he said. "Once it happens, you cannot reverse it."

Veight says you can get a free pair of earplugs at any Miracle Ear franchise before May 31st.
