An Inside Look At Papal Security

By Walt Hunter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police provided a rare look inside Philadelphia's Real Time Crime Center, a key location providing security for the Pope's upcoming visit.

Long before the Pope appears on TV cameras, the cameras in the Center are focused on the Parkway, the expressways, and every neighborhood in the city.

Inspector Walt Smith told CBS 3's Walt Hunter the Crime Center is at the heart of the Delaware Valley Intelligence Center, DIVIC, where 130 police and federal agents keep a close watch on Philadelphia and surrounding counties, including rails and rivers.

The DIVIC personnel also close monitor social media for any signs of a threat.

Inspector Smith displayed video that helped lead to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Kim Jones at 12th and Jefferson in January, saying it showed how valuable the Center can be.

But the real test now is keeping the Pope and all neighborhoods safe during the largest event of its kind in city history.

Inspector Smith emphasized while there are no credible threats, the Center will not only keep the Pope safe, but will ensure the safety of all city neighborhoods during his visit.
