All Of I-78 Now Open To Traffic After Deadly Pileup In Lebanon County

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- All lanes of Interstate 78 have been reopened and restored to traffic after a deadly pileup in Central Pennsylvania involving dozens of vehicles that appears to have been caused by a passing snow squall.

Westbound Interstate 78 between Exit 8 (Route 22) and Interstate 81 reopened to motorists in Lebanon County as of 7 a.m. Sunday.

Both directions of I-78 between I-81 and I-78 Exit 8 had been closed to traffic since about 9:30 a.m. Saturday after a massive series of collisions that resulted in three deaths and involved approximately 60 vehicles, including a large number of tractor trailers.

Officials are blaming whiteout conditions from a snow squall for the pileup that happened about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Eastbound I-78 was reopened to traffic shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday.
