Police: Victim Dies Following Crash In New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) -- An investigation is underway after a woman died as a result of a two-vehicle crash that occurred early on Tuesday morning.

Joann M. Hess, 29, was transported to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and authorities announced that she was pronounced dead at 10:19 a.m.

The accident occurred shortly before 7:00 a.m. Authorities say that Hess was trying to make a left hand turn from Rt. 273 onto Airport Road.

Officials say that as she was making the turn, she crossed into the path of an oncoming Sterling Truck. Police say the truck, being driven by John Rowell, 35, struck Hess' Nissan. Authorities add that Hess' vehicle than collided with a pedestrian sign, a street light pole and eventually a gas station sign before coming to a stop.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. Rowell sustained no injuries and authorities add that both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the incident.

Authorities add that neither drugs not alcohol seemed to have played a role in the incident and charges are not expected to be filed.
