Abington Township Red Light Camera Warning Period Ends Tomorrow; $100 Fines To Be Issued To Violators

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- Starting tomorrow, Abington Township's Red Light Camera warning period expires and fines will be issued if you run red lights at three key intersections.
During a 40-day "warnings only" period, Abington Police Chief Billy Kelly says nearly 700 violations were noted at Old York and Old Welsh Roads, Old York and Susquehanna and Moreland and Fitzwatertown Roads.
"Because of the layout and topography of those intersections, it's almost impossible to do normal enforcement. As a result, using the technology at this point was the only responsible thing to do."
After pouring over stats, Chief Kelly says there's a reason they call it the "Drive Like Your Kids Live Here" campaign.
"Only 26 percent of the violators actually are residents; nearly 75 percent were people who do not live in Abington Township."
All red-light camera violators will receive a $100 fine in the mail. Chief Kelly says red-light runners caught on camera will not receive any points on their license.
"This program, unlike most other red light programs across the country, is what they call revenue neutral."
He says Abington gets no revenue and there's no cost to the community for installing, operating or maintaining the system.
