AAA Report: Teenage Drivers Up The Risks On The Road

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Teen drivers put everyone else at risk.

That's both the title and the takeaway from a new study released by AAA.

According to the data, almost two-thirds of those killed or injured in a crash involving a teenage driver are people other than the teen who is driving.

Furthermore, nearly 50 percent of those injured were in another vehicle, and almost 30 percent of those killed were in another car.

According to AAA, 371,645 people were injured and almost 3,000 were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2013.

"Teen crash rates are higher than any other age group, and this data confirm that the impact of their crashes extend well beyond the teen who is behind the wheel," said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, on AAA's website. "Since teens drive more during the summer than any other season, this insight is a timely reminder to everyone—drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists— to be mindful when sharing the roads with young drivers."

AAA says the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is, historically, when teen crash fatalities go up.
