A Popular Northern Liberties Hot Spot Kicks Off New Name With Same Old Fun

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A popular hangout in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia gets a new name and officials celebrated that change on Sunday afternoon by hosting a community cookout and block party.

The Piazza at Schmidt's is now Schmidt's Commons. Krystal Souvanlasy with Schmidt Commons said they are spreading the word that they are open for business.

"We're throwing kind of a big party here to celebrate that and to show everyone that we are indeed open for business and it's the place to be."

Souvanlasy said as part of the their block party, they have a 200 foot long zip line that goes across the Piazza, a 30-foot water slide, and lots of different food and boutiques for people to indulge in.

"Lots and lots to see and do and experience it's kind of bringing outdoor activities into the city other than going outside of the city."

Tamara Kiernan with Strength Academy, a gym at Schmidt's Commons said community events like this go a long way with helping them make their mark in the neighborhood.

"The new rebranding is great, all these events have brought a lot of attention to our area and it's good for all of us out here."
