A Pleasant Fall Weekend: Temperatures Tumble Saturday Into Sunday

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The midweek front that brought us clouds and rain is now long gone as the broad area of low pressure continues to spin away into Canada. The Delaware Valley is left with mostly clear skies, and dry conditions will dominate through the weekend.

Currently, comfortable above average temperatures are still with us. We expect highs in the upper 70s on Friday, falling a few degrees on Saturday. You may be asking yourself "well, why haven't the temperatures fallen much now that the cold front has passed?" It's a valid question.

The reason is that the colder air still sits off to the north and west behind another cold front -- this one much weaker than its predecessor in terms of clouds and precipitation. The cold air has been just as slow to move eastward as the area of low pressure ahead of it.

Sunshine will dominate on Friday, accompanied by a few extra clouds on Saturday from the front. Once that passes through, temperatures will begin to plummet Saturday night into Sunday. Highs for the second half of the weekend will likely get no higher than the upper 50s. In addition, conditions will be on the breezy side late Saturday through Sunday.

Bermuda sits in the path of powerful Hurricane Gonzalo, which is on a collision course with the tiny island nation. Gonzalo is still a category 4, packing powerful sustained winds of 130 mph and even higher gusts. We can only keep the residents in our thoughts and prayers, and hope that they can weather the wrath of this storm. This is a reminder of how fortunate we are to be in such a quiet tropical pattern.

Today's Highs:

Philly - 71
Shore - 72
Poconos - 62
