A Name Change, And A Lot More, At Delco Animal Shelter

MEDIA, PA (CBS) -- The Delaware County SPCA has undergone a series of changes in recent months, and this week unveiled a new name under which they will operate from now on.
Call them the Providence Animal Center. They've been working on rebranding themselves for the past three years.
"We're all about life saving adoptions, wellness and community," spokeswoman Justina Calgiano told KYW Newsradio, "and we really didn't feel like Delco SPCA serves that name for a number of reasons."
Top on the list? They've been a no kill shelter for the last four years. Another, many thought the group had ties to local government. They don't.
They're also well along on a 5 year expansion plan at their Media headquarters. This past week, they opened a new wing.
"This is where our isolation and medical teams will be able to do a lot more special needs surgeries and save special animals," she said. "And when I say 'special,' it's high-risk animals that would be put down in an overcrowded shelter for lack of resources."
Speaking of resources, they're stepping up a campaign to fund their $2.75 million expansion, which they hope to complete next year.
