A Look At The Summer Gas Forecast

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On average, drivers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and across the country are paying more for a gallon of gas then they were at this time last year.
But there is a silver lining in this dark cloud.
Pennsylvania drivers are paying an average of $3.76 for a gallon of gas, that's up more than 20 cents from this time last year, and south jersey drivers are paying $3.46 for a gallon of gas, that's an increase of 6 cents from last year.
"We've had about four weeks now of the crude oil prices above $100.00. So when you see that price above $100.00 it really means that the prices for motorists are going to be a little painful at the pump," says Jim Lardear With AAA Mid-Atlantic.
This week marks the start of hurricane season and Lardear says hurricane season usually means higher gas prices but the forecast is optimistic.
"Luckily the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration is forecasting a below normal season this year," Lardear says.
That's good news, because a quiet Gulf Coast means less chances of any problems at major oil refineries.
