94-Year-Old Set To Compete In Penn Relays This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  George Scott was born in South Philadelphia a little under a century ago and now at 94-years-old, he's training in Warminster, Bucks County to run the 100-meter dash at the Penn Relays.

"I never thought I would be doing something like this," said George Scott.  "I remember Jesse Owens and others that ran and became world famous."

Scott still plays basketball regularly and plays in pickup games with men less than half his age.

"Basketball and dancing," he said.

Scott credits dancing and basketball as the reasons he's remained so youthful.

He started running track just a couple of years ago at 88 when he met his friend and trainer Dave Marovich, who convinced Scott to run his first race six years ago.

"He told me that I should get involved with track and field and I said I haven't done that since the 10th grade," said Scott.

"Scotty wasn't convinced that he was a runner, but I said look you got to run. He not only wins the race, but he beats the 88, 89 guys by 25 yards," said Marovich.

After just one year of racing competitively, Scott's career took off at the age of 89.

"2010 we did both the Senior Games and the Keystone Games and I wound up with 15 gold medals and two silver," said Scott.

"For his age group now, he's on a lower end of the nineties, 94, next year he'll be 95. There's nobody in the world that will probably match his time at 95," said Marovich.

Scott worked as a technician for KYW-TV for 40 years.
