TRENTON, N.J. (CBS)A nine-year-old girl is hospitalized after she was shot three times in Trenton on Monday afternoon.

It happened around 3 p.m. on the 200 block of Bellevue Avenue.

Struck by gunfire playing on the sidewalk outside her grandparents' Trenton home, a nine-year-old girl was hit three times by a spray of bullets police believe were intended for someone else.

"There were shots being fired up in the direction of the block," says Trenton Police Director Ralph Rivera, Jr. "There was a vehicle that took about nine rounds. We don't know what role that vehicle is playing right now."

"We heard the gunshots," says Anthony Robinson. "She come running down the street. She saying I got shot in my arm."

Anthony Robinson calls himself the little girl's grandfather. He says she was visiting and waiting for a doctor's appointment when one or more suspects started shooting on the 200 block of Bellevue Avenue just before 3 p.m. Monday.

"She says there were two guys standing there in the front of the mailbox or the stop sign," Robinson says. "She said they just started firing."

The girl was able to make it home, shot once in the arm and grazed in the leg and side. She was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she underwent surgery.

"She took it like a champ, you know. She was sitting up and talking to her mother," Robinson says.

Twenty minutes earlier police had been at the same house looking for a man neighbors say is the girl's uncle on an outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody and police searched the family's house and yard as the investigation continues.

The girl is listed in stable condition Monday night.

So far, no arrests have been made.

An investigation is ongoing.
