PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It is somewhat amazing the amount of sugar many of us take into our diet.

We consume vast amounts despite the fact we know there are health risks. According to the latest morbidity and mortality weekly report three in 10 American adults reported consuming sugary drinks at least once a day.

Sugar-sweetened beverage intake was highest among adults in Mississippi, Louisiana, and West Virginia. Intake was higher among 18-24 year olds than among older adults. It was also quite high in those with less than a high school education.

Overall, consumption was highest in southern states. Sweet tea, fruit drinks, sports drinks as well as regular sodas often contain more sugar than we recommend in one day for the average adult.
