Studies: Mockery Of Obesity Can Have Short Term, Long Term Effects

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- At one time it was very popular in sitcoms and movies to make fun of people who are obese. As time has gone on sensitivities have improved and we are seeing less and less of it, but this type of mockery of obesity is being shown by studies to have both short term and long term effects for those who are obese.

The impact can be dramatic for children and according to a new report it may lead to eating disorders years later.

Researchers talked with 135 overweight and obese girls. About half said other girls taunted them about their weight.  Almost all the girls said they wished they were thinner. But for those teased at a greater rate there were greater odds of taking unhealthy steps to shed pounds. These included emotional eating and purging. Educators realize this and there are more attempts to try and prevent these issues.
