Police: Man Faces Charges After Woman Fatally Struck By Vehicle In Kingsessing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police have arrested a 23-year-old man who is charged with killing a woman after allegedly trying to pass a SEPTA trolley that was picking up passengers.
It happened around 9:10 a.m. Monday near 54th Street and Woodland Avenue.
Police say Malachi Armstrong was allegedly driving a sedan that tried to pass a stopped SEPTA trolley on the left side when the vehicle struck a 38-year-old woman in the crosswalk. That woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say Armstrong's vehicle then veered into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle, but no one in that car was injured.
"It's 9:30 in the morning, we're lucky more people weren't injured," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford.
"It's like devastating to me. I don't have my sister," said the victim's sister. "He just kept saying 'mommy said she's coming home and who going take me to school auntie' and that just broke me down."
"I just feel like gone too soon," she said.
Armstrong is being charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Homicide by Vehicle while Driving Under the Influence, and other related offenses.
