Eastern State Penitentiary Hosts Prison Food Weekend

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Eastern State Penitentiary will allow visitors to taste the punishment food known as "Nutraloaf" from five state recipes for its "Prison Food Weekend."

Each state has a distinct taste from a more palatable version served in Idaho, it resembles a breakfast muffin, to well one could say a barely legal loaf with non-dairy cheese and raisins that used to be served to unruly Vermont prisoners, until they went to the courts.

"The Department of Corrections had to give each inmate who was going to eat Nutraloaf a hearing, so far the Department of Corrections hasn't updated their policies so Nutraloaf is on suspension in Vermont," said Eastern State Penitentiary spokeswoman Annie Anderson.

You will also be able to taste the comfort food known as chi chi where inmates mix things from the commissary and vending machines in a trash bag and share with friends.

Prison food weekend runs June 6th and 7th.
