5-Year-Old Girl Dies After Fire Inside Northeast Philadelphia Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A young girl has died days after a fire inside her home in Northeast Philadelphia.

Five-year-old Sophia Olsen and her mother, 40-year-old Kristina Henes, were critically injured in the fire that started around 5:30 p.m. Thursday inside their home in the 3700 block of Hereford Lane.

Officials say Sophia was trapped in a back bedroom and her mother was unable to get to her because of the heavy smoke.

Fire crews were eventually able to get to the girl who was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

Authorities say an off-duty officer who lives nearby was injured while trying to rescue the girl. He has since been released from the hospital.

The mother remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
