3 On Your Side: Best Things To Buy In January

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Did you shop until you dropped over the holidays?  While many people plan to stay clear of the mall for a while and rest their credit cards, 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan says bargain hunters can find some great deals in January.

Even though shopping crowds thin out after the holidays, when DealNews.com examined several years of January pricing trends they found if you're looking to work out at home instead of the gym you can expect deep discounts in January on fitness equipment.  Mark LoCastro of DealNews says, "It takes up a lot of showroom space so these manufacturers, if they are especially making a new version of that model, they want to clear the inventory and get it out of the ways, or even the training accessories and DVDs, these things are frequently produced."

While winter clothing hasn't hit rock bottom clearance prices just yet, DealNews says you can still see 40-60 percent off.  According to LoCastro, "The best thing about shopping for winter clothing now is that they probably have your size and a lot of it."

Looking for home furniture?  DealNews says West Elm and Crate and Barrel are among stores that heavily discount furniture collections in January.

Also, with manufacturers introducing new products at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas this week you can expect discounts for tech devices to soon follow.  LoCastro says, "So when they improve upon a pre-existing model that pre-existing model is going to see significant discounts in January and February.  We're talking about TV's, laptops, cameras android tablets, you name it."

If you're looking to get a jump start on your taxes, DealNews finds that in January you'll likely see discounts on tax prep software of up to 50 percent off, on average leaving you with an extra $10 to $20 in your pocket.
