The gunfire erupted at 15th Street and Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia just after 7:15 Sunday night.

"At first it sounded like firecrackers, everyone started running, jumping and everything," Saladeen Muhammad said.

Authorities tell Eyewitness News that two officers were in the area for a separate murder investigation of a woman killed on the 2500 block of Alder Street, that happened just before 4:30 Sunday afternoon.

That is when officers saw the gunman involved in the vehicle shooting speed away in a black dodge.

Police perused the gunman, trying to pull him over, but investigators say a man driving a KIA, not involved in either of the shootings, crashed into the police car near Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue. The gunman then floored it and got away.

Both officers are in stable condition at an area hospital.
