2 Injured In Ogontz Building Collapse

By Elizabeth Hur

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities say two men were injured Sunday night after a building collapsed in the Ogontz neighborhood of Philadelphia.

According to authorities, the two-story vacant home collapsed just before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Ogontz Avenue and Limekiln Pike.

"The middle of the building is sagging and it could have been from the weather, the change in temperature. I just don't know," says Fire Captain Clifford Gilliam.

Two men who were reportedly walking by at the time of the collapse were transported right away to Einstein Hospital. The extent of their injuries in unknown at this time, but it is believed they may have been hit by falling debris.

Neighbors that spoke with CBS3 Eyewitness News didn't see the crash, but they felt it:

"It was nice and everybody was out and, boom, it just shook my apartment and I live right behind the building, so it shook my apartment and that's why they told me to get out because they were worried that buildings going to continue to fall," Michael Scott says.

Neighbors add it's incredible that more people didn't get hurt. They say the building is used to house medical offices, but that it's been vacant for years.

L&I officials are on the scene surveying the damage. Demolition Crews have been called to tear down the rest of the building.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
