14-Year-Old Delaware Student Struck And Killed

NEW CASTLE, De. (CBS) -- The Colonial School District in Delaware has announced that a 14-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon. The Delaware State Police Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident.

Officials say the 14-year-old student, Tyler Spahn, was struck and killed while crossing Route 13 shortly before 3:00 p.m.

It was announced that the boy was a student at George Read Middle School and was with three other students when the accident took place.

Authorities say the boy ran in front of traffic and was hit by a car being driven by 21-year-old Jamia Dorsey. They add that the she stopped her vehicle and remained on the scene, waiting for police to arrive.

Officials say that they believe drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the accident. The investigation showed that Spahn and the other teens were not using a marked crosswalk or the pedestrian footbridge that crosses Route 13. Officials say no charges will be filed.

The school district is not naming the student at this time. Counselors will be at the middle school on Thursday morning to help students as they cope with the news.
