1 Dead, 2 Injured In Vine Street Expressway Crash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One person is dead after an early morning crash along the Vine Street Expressway in Center City Philadelphia.

It happened shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes between Broad and 8th Streets when a car collided with a large SUV.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 24-year-old driver of the car suffered serious injuries in the crash and also was taken to Hahnemann Hospital.

A 29-year-old woman, who was passenger in the SUV, was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the accident, a stretch of I-676 was shut down for nearly three hours, forcing eastbound traffic to exit at Broad Street.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
