Giants Tried To Claim QB Zach Mettenberger

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Giants reportedly put in a waiver claim for former Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger, but he was awarded to the San Diego Chargers instead.

The Chargers had the higher waiver priority because they finished with a worse record last season. The Cincinnati Bengals also tried to claim him.

Tennessee waived Mettenberger on Monday. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, the strong-armed QB completed 60.3 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, but was 0-10 as a starter.

Behind Eli Manning on the Giants' depth chart is Ryan Nassib and B.J. Daniels, the former Seahawk and Texan who was signed last week.

Manning, 35, has made 183 consecutive starts dating back to his 2004 rookie season. That streak is the longest among active quarterbacks and the third longest all-time, only behind Brett Favre (297) and Peyton Manning (208).

In San Diego, Mettenberger will be reunited with former Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt, now the Chargers' offensive coordinator. Mettenberger will compete against former Jet Kellen Clemens and undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici to back up Philip Rivers.
