NYC Activists To Protest China's Annual Dog Meat Festival
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Animal rights activists are expected to gather in downtown Manhattan Friday to protest China's annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival, where "thousands of canines are tortured, slaughtered and eaten," according to the Suffolk County SPCA.
Global Strays, a New York-based animal rights group, gather alongside other local animal organizations to call for a boycott of all dog products imported from China.
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is celebrated annually in Yulin, Guangxi, China, through the summer solstice. It is estimated that 10,000 to 15,000 dogs are consumed throughout the widely-criticized, days-long festival.
This year, the festival is scheduled to start on Tuesday, June 21.
According to the Suffolk County SPCA, which stands in solidarity with the cause, dogs and other attendees of Friday afternoon's protest at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Chinatown will be dressed in purple -- the international color of animal abuse.
It is the first rally of its kind to take place in New York City.
