YouTube Ad Encourages Fans To Push For Change To Redskins' Team Name
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The National Congress of American Indians has released an ad ahead of the Super Bowl in hopes of encouraging fans to push the Washington Redskins to change their team's name.
The ad prompted Washington D.C. city council member and former mayor Marion Barry to call on team owner Dan Snyder to change the name of the team in a series of tweets on Friday, CBS D.C. reported.
Snyder has said that he does not plan to change the team name and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has supported Snyder's right to keep the team name, 1010 WINS's Carol D'Auria reported.
"Let me remind you this is the name of a football team. A football team that has had that name for 80 years and has presented the name in a way that has honored Native Americans," Goodell said.
Still, some fans on Super Bowl Boulevard said that it may be time for a change.
"I know tradition is nice but you're offending a lot of people that really don't care for it," Pablito Peppin said, "I think it may be time for a change."
