Yonkers Man Arrested In Investigation Into Deaths Of 25 Cats Found Hanging From Trees

YONKERS (CBSNewYork) - It was a discovery that shocked Yonkers back in April.

That's when Department of Public Works employees found the bodies of 25 cats hanging from a tree on Overlook Terrace.

The animals had had their heads crushed and were stuffed into plastic bags, officials said.

Ernest Lungaro of the SPCA of Westchester called the discovery "pretty disturbing."

Rene Carcamo, 60, is charged with illegally disposing of dead cats and animal cruelty.

"The SPCA of Westchester is pleased that an arrest has been made in this case, after many months of investigation, interviews and hard work," said Lungaro.

"Last April, like so many Yonkers residents and animal lovers around the world, I was saddened to learn that 25 cats were found dead in our City – the victims of an unconscionable act of violence," Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said. "This senseless disregard for the welfare of animals and pets has no place in our society, and it will not be tolerated in Yonkers. I commend the Yonkers Police Department and SPCA of Westchester for conducting a thorough investigation and bringing a suspect into custody for animal cruelty."

"The SPCA remains saddened by the magnitude and severity of this crime against such innocent animals," said SPCA of Westchester's Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf.
